Who We Are

Alkarama is a Palestinian, feminist, secular and anti-colonial women’s movement founded in Madrid in 2017, working for Palestinian liberation and women’s emancipation.

Alkarama — Palestinian Women’s Movement

The Palestinian Women’s Movement (MMP) Alkarama was launched in Madrid on 29 March 2017, on the eve of Palestinian Land Day, by a group of Palestinian women from Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona.

Alkarama is a Palestinian, feminist, secular and anti-colonial organisation. Its main aim is to create a new space for Palestinian women in the diaspora to speak in their own voices.

Our Objectives

  • To contribute to the liberation of the Palestinian people from Israeli occupation through social, cultural and political action, with particular emphasis on boycott campaigns.
  • To claim a space for Palestinian women in the diaspora to speak in their own voices.
  • To strengthen the visibility of Palestinian women in public debate and solidarity spaces related to the Palestinian cause.
  • To organise activities that highlight the importance of women’s role in the Palestinian struggle against colonialism and occupation.
  • To create a dedicated space exclusively for Palestinian women to meet, fostering empowerment, mutual recognition, connection and sisterhood.
  • To build relationships and dialogue with feminist organisations and Palestine solidarity groups.
  • To strengthen contact with Palestinian women activists and women’s organisations in the territories occupied in 1948, Gaza and the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and refugee camps in any country.
  • To facilitate dialogue and connections between internationalist and Palestinian women’s organisations.
  • To defend Palestinian women’s emancipation and rights, and to expose the overlapping forms of oppression and abuse they face under occupation and patriarchy, with particular attention to women prisoners, women in Gaza and the West Bank, the apartheid system in the territories occupied in 1948, and the different circumstances of Palestinian refugee women in the Arab world and Europe.
  • To challenge stereotypes about Palestinian women, Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism, particularly their gendered forms.
  • To help welcome newly arrived Palestinian women and support their inclusion in society.

Participation

We welcome the participation of all people who are perceived as Palestinian women and who support the movement’s objectives. Participation requires endorsement by a woman who is already a member of the movement.
